Questions about atheists and unbelievers on GotQuestions.org
Catholicism
The different views of Catholics vs Christians
Salvation
-
Catholics: Faith in Jesus Christ, plus good works and the sacraments.
-
Christians: Faith in Jesus Christ alone, with good works as a result of that faith.
Authority
-
Catholics: The Magisterium (Pope, bishops, priests, etc.), Tradition and the Bible.
-
Christians: The Bible.
Catholic differences with Christians
- Mary the mother of Jesus
-
Mary being a perpetual virgin with no children besides Jesus.
-
Mary being sinless her whole life and assumed up to heaven.
-
Asking Mary to pray for us or intercede for us.
- The Pope and Doctrine
-
Pope is the head of the church - as the successor to the Apostle Peter.
-
Ex Cathedra - when the Pope or church teaches infallibly "from the chair" a doctrine on a matter of faith or morals with the authority of Jesus Christ.
-
Anathema - means you are "accursed" or "excommunicated" if you don't believe Catholic doctrine, but judicial penalties were removed in 1983 by the church.
- Communion, Sacraments, Sin and Purgatory
-
Transubstantiation - communion elements turn into the actual body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus.
-
Sacraments - such as baptism, confirmation, Eucharist (communion), penance, fasting and others earn you grace to compensate for sins.
-
Purgatory - an intermediate state after death where your soul goes to burn off imperfections before going to heaven.
-
Venial sins (non-deadly) - send you to purgatory at death, but good works and sacraments forgive venial sins.
-
Mortal sins (deadly) - send you to hell at death, but confession to a priest and penance restores your soul to going to purgatory at death.
-
Indulgences - are earned by confession, communion, avoiding all sin, praying for the Pope, and performing a work such as prayer, almsgiving or pilgrimage. They reduce the temporal punishment one has to undergo for sins in purgatory.
-
Treasury of Merit - is the good works and grace of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the saints that are stored up in heaven and dispensed by the Church through indulgences to shorten or eliminate the time spent in purgatory.

Islam / Muslims
The different views of Muslims vs Christians
Salvation
-
Islam: Keep the five pillars of Islam and do good works to outweigh your bad deeds. There is no assurance of salvation.
-
Christians: Faith in Jesus Christ alone, with good works as a result of that faith.
Authority
-
Islam:
1. The Qur'an (a book derived from the prophet Muhammad who received revelation from the angel Gabriel beginning in 610 AD for about 23 years).
2. The Hadith (a collection of traditions and sayings of Muhammad written centuries later that provide explanations and practical application of the verses in the Qur'an).
3. Portions of the Bible including the Torah (first 5 books of the Old Testament), Psalms, and the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). They say the Bible was divinely inspired, but was later corrupted over time and priority goes to the Qur'an.
-
Christians: The Bible.
Five pillars of Islam
-
Profession of Faith (shahada) - "I bear witness that there is no god but God, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God."
-
Five daily prayers (salat) - at 6am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, 9pm (bow to Mecca).
The angel Gabriel took Muhammad at night on a white horse-like animal (the "Buraq") and flew him to Jerusalem, then he climbed up a ladder to meet God above the seventh heaven. God required 50 daily prayers from everyone. Muhammad then went down to the sixth heaven where he met Moses who said "return to God and ask for fewer prayers because 50 is too many." After negotiating back and forth nine times between God and Moses, they finally agreed to five daily prayers which God would reward tenfold. (Hadith Sahih Al-Bukhari 4.54.429)
-
Almsgiving (zakat) - is a form of charity where 2.5% of one's net worth is given away each year to support the poor and needy.
-
Fasting during Ramadan (sawm) - no eating, drinking, smoking or sexual intercourse from dawn to sunset during the ninth month (29-30 days) of the Islamic lunar calendar.
-
Pilgrimage to Mecca - (hajj) - at least once in your life walk seven times around the Kaaba, a cube-shaped shrine in the center of the Great Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This is the holiest site in Islam. It was originally built by Abraham and his son, Ishmael.
The Qur'an
-
Contradicts itself - says God created the world in 6 days, then elsewhere in 8 days.
-
Contradicts the Bible - says humans were formed from a clot of blood; God turned some men into apes for punishment; confuses Mary (Jesus' mother) with Miriam (Moses' sister); mistakenly calls Mary the third person of the Trinity and not the Holy Spirit; and deceiving non-Muslims is allowed.
-
Qur'an was not written by Muhammad - since he was illiterate, but others wrote it down later. There were an estimated 30 versions of the Qur'an with 93,000 differences until most Muslims settled on the "Hafs" version in 1924.
-
Permits wife beating - written in the Qur'an (Surah 4:34).
Islamic views of Jesus - different than Christianity
-
Jesus is not God, or the Son of God: Muslims say it is an unforgiveable sin (called "Shirk") to associate Jesus or anyone else with Allah since they believe there is only one God. They do not believe in the Trinity and say Jesus was not divine (Surah 9:30).
-
Jesus was not crucified and was not raised from the dead: "They slew him not, nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them." Instead, they believe Jesus never died since Allah raised him to heaven. (Surah 4:157-158; 3:55).
Muhammad - Allah's last and greatest prophet
-
Had 11 wives - and later it was written in the Qur'an that the wife limit was four.
-
Married six-year-old Aisha - but consummated the marriage when she was nine years old and he was 53 years old (Sahih al-Bukhari 5134).
-
Born around 570 AD in Mecca (Saudi Arabia) - and died in 632 AD from poisoning.

Mormonism or LDS

The different views of Mormons vs Christians
"Mormonism" and "LDS" refer to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Salvation
-
Mormons: They believe in faith through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism, the laying on of hands by the priesthood to bestow the Holy Ghost, and to live according to God's commandments. They also believe in a general salvation for almost everyone, including non-Mormons.
-
Christians: Faith in Jesus Christ alone, with good works as a result of that faith.
Authority
-
Mormons: Four books - the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Bible (King James version) though they claim some text is corrupted when it doesn't align with their other three books.
-
Christians: The Bible.
The Book of Mormon
-
Joseph Smith published the Book of Mormon at the age of 24 in 1830 and died 14 years later.
-
The angel Moroni told him where to find "Seer Stones" and a book of "Golden Plates" with Egyptian engravings buried in a stone box in New York.
-
He used the "Seer Stones" to translate the "Golden Plates" into the Book of Mormon. He placed the seer stones (held together with a metal rim like a pair of glasses) into a hat and pressed his face into the hat and watched sentences appear on the stones from the covered-up golden plates lying nearby. He also used a single seer stone and later received direct revelation without the need for seer stones. After completing the translation, the angel retrieved the golden plates.
Joseph Smith - founder and prophet (1805-1844)
-
John the Baptist came down from heaven and ordained him to the Aaronic priesthood.
-
Peter, James and John came down from heaven and ordained him to the Melchizedek priesthood.
-
He falsely prophesied a temple will be built in Missouri - within a generation of 1832, which did not happen. (Doctrine & Covenants 84:1-5).
-
He secretly married 30-40 wives - including a 14-year-old, and ten of them were already married.
-
He was murdered at age 38 by an angry mob - after he and his brother were jailed for inciting a riot to burn down an anti-Mormon newspaper building that wrote against polygamy.
Brigham Young - second president and prophet (1801-1877)
-
He married 56 women and had 56 children from 16 of them.
Note: Polygamy (multiple wives) is no longer allowed in the Church.
Mormon differences with Protestants
-
God was once a mortal man - then he was exalted to a god.
-
Jesus is one of many of God's sons - as is Satan, and Jesus is not fully God.
-
They deny the Trinity - and say God and Jesus are separate and have flesh and bones.
-
Three levels of heaven - Highest level is for those who follow all of Mormonism.
-
Man can become a god - Inside the highest level in heaven you can become a god.
-
Baptize for the dead - members are baptized on behalf of a dead person to offer their spirit the chance to accept the gospel and progress to the Celestial Kingdom.
Mormon Practices
-
Abstain from coffee, tea, alcohol, gambling, drugs (except medicines).
-
Two year mission - young members serve two years as full-time missionaries.
-
Temple garments (underwear) are worn under clothes at all times - by adults after a temple endowment ceremony promising to keep God's commandments.
-
Give 10% of earnings annually - plus a donation to the poor each month.
-
No Mormon black priests were allowed until the church president and apostles received a revelation and updated the Doctrine and Covenants book in 1978.

Judaism / Jews
The different views of Jews vs Christians
Salvation
-
Jews: Faith in the God of the Old Testament and follow his laws.
-
Christians: Faith in Jesus Christ alone, with good works as a result of that faith.
Authority
-
Jews: The Old Testament of the Bible, including the ten commandments, the Mitzvoh (613 laws of the Old Testament) and the rabbinic laws.
-
Christians: The whole Bible (Old Testament and New Testament).
Jewish differences with Christians
-
Jesus was not the messiah - since the Jews were looking for a messiah to free them from Roman bondage and set up a kingdom on earth. Instead, Jesus allowed himself to be arrested, tried, and crucified so they stopped believing he was the promised prophet.
-
Man is inherently good - and they don't believe in Adam's original sin.
-
No need for a savior - or intermediary.
-
Many don't believe in hell - or eternal punishment.
-
Follow the Mitzvoh - 613 laws from the Old Testament to draw closer to God.
Jewish Teachings
-
Study the Torah - first five books of the Old Testament.
-
Rest on the Sabbath - from sunset Friday until sunset on Saturday.
-
Worship God only
-
Celebrate 7 Jewish Feasts - such as Passover.

Jehovah's Witnesses
The different views of Jehovah's Witnesses vs Christians
Salvation
-
Jehovah's Witnesses: Faith in Jesus Christ, obey Jehovah’s commands, join the JW organization, and do good works by active participation in their ministry such as going door-to-door or passing out literature.
-
Christians: Faith in Jesus Christ alone, with good works as a result of that faith.
Authority
-
Jehovah's Witnesses: The Bible, but the JW's own modified version of it called the New World Translation. The Governing Body of men in the New York headquarters. The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society.
-
Christians: The Bible.
Founder - Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916)
-
He disagreed with traditional Christian doctrine since he didn't believe in hell or the immortality of the soul. He started this offshoot of Christianity in the 1870's as he claimed to be a better interpreter of the Bible even though he didn't know Greek, the language of the New Testament.
JW beliefs that differ from Protestants
-
Reject the Trinity and do NOT believe God is one being who exists in three co-equal persons: Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy Spirit.
-
Jesus is a created being and is the firstborn heavenly son that God later transferred to the womb of a Jewish virgin named Mary.
-
Jesus was originally Michael the Archangel in heaven, then became Jesus on earth, then resumed his role as Michael the Archangel in heaven after his resurrection.
-
Jesus is a lesser God, but not Almighty God.
-
Reject the deity of Jesus by saying he was “a” God, not the “one true” God.
-
Jesus died on an upright stake, not a cross. They view the cross as a pagan symbol. Note: They printed a cross symbol on their Watchtower magazine up until 1936 when they removed it.
-
Jesus was resurrected only with a spirit body, not a physical body.
-
Holy Spirit is NOT the third person in the Trinity, but is an “active force.”
Resurrection to heaven - a second chance
-
Jehovah’s Witnesses: Billions of the “unrighteous” dead who did not have the chance to know Jehovah will be resurrected in the future and have the opportunity in the afterlife to know him and serve him. However, only Jehovah will determine who gets a second chance.
-
Christians: After death, there is no second chance to go to heaven.
Dual Heavens - 144,000 in heaven, all others on paradise earth
-
Jehovah’s Witnesses: Only 144,000 who are in the “anointed class” go to heaven in spirit form to rule with Jesus. All heavenly spots were supposedly filled by about 1935. Later, the 1935 date was extended to the present day. Heaven, for the rest of the JW faithful, is to live on a new paradise earth with a physical body.
-
Christians: All those who believe in Christ go to the same heaven and there is no limit.
Hell - no eternal torment
-
Jehovah's Witnesses: There’s no eternal torment in a literal hell because those who reject Jehovah will be annihilated (cease to exist).
-
Christians: Those who reject Christ will spend eternity in the final hell called the “Lake of Fire” where the wicked are “tormented day and night forever and ever.”
False Prophesies - failed predictions
-
1914 – Second Coming of Christ. They predicted Christ would return physically to earth in October 1914. This date would be the end of the Great Tribulation; the end of Armageddon; followers would be raised to heaven; and Christ would establish his peaceful, 1,000 year millennial reign on earth. In reality, World War I began in 1914. Later, with hindsight, they explained their error and said 1914 did not mark Jesus' "literal" return, but his "invisible" presence.
-
1925 – Coming of Saints to Earth. They predicted the return of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in 1925 to reign on earth as physical beings. It didn’t happen.
-
1975 – End of the World. They predicted back in 1966 that the world as we know it would end after the battle of Armageddon in 1975. Then, Jesus will reign from heaven for 1,000 years over a restored paradise on earth. Based on this prediction, people sold houses and businesses, stopped getting married, etc. When the prediction failed, it's estimated that over a million people left the faith. They no longer set dates for the end of the world.
Jehovah’s Witnesses Practices
-
They do not celebrate Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, birthdays and other holidays because they have pagan roots.
-
They don’t believe in going to war, military service or saluting a country's flag.
-
They don’t accept blood transfusions.
-
They don’t vote or get involved in political matters.
-
The place they worship is called a Kingdom Hall, not a church.
-
They do not pay most of their local leaders or clergy.
-
They are not required to tithe, but donation boxes are available.
-
They are known for their door-to-door ministry.
-
If you leave the religion, you will be "shunned" (members won't talk to you).
-
They consider themselves Christians, but not Protestants.
